Why Choose Wind Power As An Alternative Energy Source?

Wind power is a form of alternative energy production that is becoming more commonplace as evidenced by the number of wind farms that one sees nowadays dotting the landscape and on offshore wind farms.

This has caused many people to seriously consider wind power as an alternative energy source – and why not because the wind is free and in plentiful supply.

Why Choose Wind Power?

Electric bills are steadily increasing but the cost of wind turbine energy, apart from installion and maintenance costs, is zero. Startup costs may be considerable but the good news is that the cost of installing and hooking up a turbine is steadily falling as demand rises and companies are having more commercial success producing the turbines and making them more efficient.

However, the reasons why people are moving away from the traditional energy sources are varied and not always financial.

Many people turn to alternative energy solutions not to save money but because of political concerns and the possibility of terrorist strikes on power supplies which would leave them without any electricity for the many modern appliances they have come to rely on. Many choose to do it simply because they are concerned about their own impact on the environment. Whatever their reasons for choosing wind power they then have to think about how to implement a wind power system.

DIY Wind Powered Generators

Many people have built their own wind powered generator from plans that are widely available on the internet and elsewhere. I have to warn you that anyone who wants to find out more about building residential wind turbines should be careful to avoid vague and misleading plans that will leave you frustrated and out of pocket.

Obviously, it’s far easier and less expensive to get hooked into the local electric company’s grid than it is to set up and hook into your own wind power system, but in the long run one saves money by utilizing the wind for one’s energy needs — while at the same time being more independent. Not only that, paying electric bills while still having all the advantages of the modern electrically-powered lifestyle is a great feeling.

Sell Excess Energy

In many states homeowners can even sell their excess energy back to the power company under what are called “net metering laws”. The rates that they are being paid by the local power companies for this energy are standard retail rates — in other words, the homeowners are actually profiting from their own energy production.

As you can imagine, many power companies feel that it’s unfair that they should have to pay retail rates to private individuals but that’s not our problem. They feel they should only pay the wholesale rate for your electricity as the companies seem to be more concerned about their short-term profits than about the environmental benefits, especially in the long run, of the increased use of wind turbines or wind farms.

So, will wind power generation meet much of our alternative energy needs or is it just too expensive for most of us to contemplate at this point in time? In truth, it is not just the cost to our pockets but the impact on our environment that needs to be taken into consideration. Above all, alternative energy solutions need to be considered in the long term to make sense of it all.

Whatever the economics of wind power systems they are something that will become more widespread in the future, due to rising energy costs that will make home wind power energy seem more and more attractive, financially and environmentally. For the practical-minded individual building a wind powered generator from plans could be something that results in much reduced or even non-existent electric bills.
