You can make great energy savings by making just a few changes to how you do things when washing your clothes.
Here are some tips that will help to reduce the amount of electrical energy used when doing your laundry:
Only wash when you have a full load of washing to do.
Never wash a half a load of clothes when you can wash a full load. It costs you just as much to wash a half a load of clothes as it does a full load.
Underwear obviously has to be changed regularly so if you can buy more then you won’t have to wash them every day.
You will not only save on your electricity bill, but will save your clothes as well as they will last longer if they are not washed as often.
Wash your clothes at lower temperatures.
You can wash many of your clothes at a cooler temperature as long as you use a modern washing detergent suitable for low temperature washes. However, it’s best to use hot water for sheets and towels for hygiene purposes.
Hang clothes to dry on the line
In cold, damp days, there is no point in hanging washing on an outside clothesline, as the washing will never dry. That’s when most people use a dryer but it uses a lot of electricity.
If possible, buy a folding clothes dryer which you can stand in a warm room and let the clothes stay there until they are nearly dry. They will not get as soft as they would in a clothes dryer, but you can put them in to finish the drying off when they are still slightly damp.
It will probably take about five minutes on hot in the dryer and save you money in energy costs. By doing this, you won’t have to use your electric dryer as much which will save electricity and as a bonus, it will last a lot longer before having to replace it.
Make sure the lint trap in the dryer is cleaned out regularly
Your dryer will work more efficiently and will save you money in energy costs if you make sure the dryer lint trap is cleaned out. There may be one or two lint traps in the dryer, depending on what kind of dryer you have.
You will have one that you pull out and clean out and possibly one that goes through a vent to the outside of the house. While the outside vent can be cleaned a couple of times a year, the inside lint trap should be cleaned every time you use your dryer.
