			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>There&#8217;s no argument that tidal energy could become a large supplier of energy and if done correctly will give us clean, renewable energy.  Although not cheap to build, once the infrastructure is in place, the energy of the tides is basically a free resource and renewable.</p>
<p>The great thing about the tides is that they can be predicted with virtual certainty so are very dependable. As the tides occur at certain times of the day, we know exactly how much power will be generated and when.  A tidal power system can generate electricity for many hours a day, and can be very cheap to operate after the initial cost of constructing  the barrages. <span id="more-133"></span></p>
<p>They need very little maintenance or fuel or energy to run. By and large, tidal power can become a very dependable and regular source of energy. </p>
<p>There are many locations in the world that are capable of producing adequate tidal energy for producing electricity. However, there is opposition from environmentalists which hinders valuable research and prevents us from fully implementing tidal energy as an energy source. Nonetheless, as the world’s non-renewable energy sources begin to peter out, tidal power could become a very important supplier of our energy needs. </p>
<p>Taking everything into consideration, there are arguments and counterarguments about the use of tidal energy as an alternative energy source.</p>
<p><strong>Impact on Wildlife</strong></p>
<p>Changes in the ecosystem and the impact of wildlife and fish stocks provide the main arguments for opponents of tidal barrages.They say that  birds, fish, and other species could be affected in the surrounding areas. On the positive side though,  barrages could also help protect the coastline from floods and storms. They are considerably more friendly to the environment than fossil fuels which produce lots of greenhouse gases. </p>
<p>Tidal energy would make a good alternative to fossil fuels, but the effects that it can have on the environment must be taken in consideration and it may only be a good thing in certain situations. So like most things, it is a fine balancing act when it comes to protecting the environment and taking advantage of nature.</p>
<p>More research into tidal power installations is needed such as the most suitable locations to build them to take full advantage of this powerful and renewable energy source without duly affecting the local ecosystem.</p>
<p>In the main, the only downside there is to using renewable energies such a tidal power in the place of fossil fuels is the current costs involved in implementing them. It is expensive, but it can be a good thing for the environment, which no-one can put a price tag on. </p>
<p>I am sure you will agree that fossil fuels are not going to last forever, and now is the time to think of solutions for when that happens. Tidal energy would be an alternative energy source that could be part of the solution.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>We already know that oil, gas and coal are all resources that we may eventually run out of.  These are the non-renewable resources that we rely heavily on today.  We use these non-renewable resources to do many things, including supplying us with power, heating our homes, businesses and schools and more.</p>
<p>There is no doubt that their use has helped to shape the world we now live in. But, when we have finally used all the non-renewable resources up and there are no more to be found, then what?<span id="more-124"></span></p>
<p>What will happen when we have to go without the convenience that we are so accustomed to? It&#8217;s nice to flip a switch to get power and it is even better when the latest technology allows us to press a button to do something.  We are extremely lucky to have so many nifty devices to help us in our everyday lives.  We have become so reliant on them &#8211; so what happens when we don&#8217;t have anything to power them?</p>
<p>What we have to focus on in the future is renewable resources. These resources are all resources that are in abundant supply and will sustain our energy needs well into the future. Renewable energy sources such as Solar, Wind, Geothermal, Ocean, and Hydro power are all available right now but we need to expand their use to reduce our dependence on finite energy resources.</p>
<p><strong>Solar Energy</strong></p>
<p>Solar energy refers to power from the sun. We see this in everyday life as solar covers are placed on swimming pools to help then gather and retain heat. When you wear black on a sunny day, you will feel the effects of solar power. Solar power takes this heat and turns it into useful energy, which we can use to heat our homes and power other electronic devices.</p>
<p><strong>Wind Power</strong></p>
<p>Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into another form of energy, such as wind turbines to make electricity, wind mills for mechanical power, wind pumps to pumping water or draining areas, or something as simple as sails to propel ships.</p>
<p>Wind power is one of the oldest forms of alternative energy, along with water power, Windmills and waterwheels have been used for thousands of years to provide useful work, and are still used in many countries today in more advanced forms, converting mechanical energy into electricity via generators.</p>
<p>Wind energy, in comparison to fossil fuels, is plentiful, renewable, clean, and produces no greenhouse gases during operation. Despite all these plus factors, the construction of wind farms has become a sore point with many because of their visual impact and other effects on the environment.</p>

In July 1887, a Scottish academic, Professor James Blyth, undertook wind power experiments that culminated in a UK patent in 1891. In the United States, Charles F. Brush  produced electricity using a wind powered machine, starting in the winter of 1887-1888, which powered his home and laboratory until about 1900. In the 1890s, the Danish scientist and inventor Poul la Cour constructed wind turbines to generate electricity, which was then used to produce hydrogen. These were the first of what was to become the modern form of wind turbine.</p>
<p><strong>Hydro Power</strong></p>
<p>Hydro power takes energy from flowing water and captures it turning it into electricity. Hydro power is very expensive, requiring the the construction of huge dams and turbines and requires a great deal of technology to successfully extract electrical energy from the power of flowing water.</p>
<p><strong>Geothermal Energy</strong></p>
<p>Geothermal energy has been used for power, heating, and cooling. A geothermal heat pump can extract enough heat from shallow ground anywhere in the world to provide home heating, but industrial applications need the higher temperatures of deep resources. Geothermal energy came about from the time the Earth was formed, from radioactive decay of minerals, and from solar energy absorbed at the surface.</p>
<p>The geothermal resources of our planet are, in theory, more than adequate to supply all our energy needs, the problem being that only a very small proportion of it may be profitably exploited. This is because of the extremely high cost of drilling and exploration to find and extract the resources buried deep with the Earth.</p>
<p>There is one other important benefit that geothermal power can give us if fully exploited. Geothermal wells release greenhouse gases trapped deep within the earth, but these emissions are at much lower energy levels than those of fossil fuels. Because of this, geothermal power could help reduce global warming if used instead of fossil fuels.</p>
<p><strong>Ocean Power</strong></p>
<p>The oceans cover vast amounts of our planet and the constant motion of the waves and tides hold massive potential if we could just extract the mechanical energy from them and convert it into electricity. Ocean power technology comes in many forms and new and innovative devices are being developed and tested all the time to decide which are more cost-effective, practical and efficient.</p>
<p>As you can see there are plenty of environmentally renewable resources are all around us ready for the taking. There are so many benefits from using them &#8211; we know what they can do and how we can take advantage of them. If we don&#8217;t do something about it very soon we may live to regret it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>When you think about it  we should be able to use the massive amounts of  power from the sun not just for heating domestic hot water but for  much more of our energy needs, including electricity generation.   Scientists have been working hard to make this feasible but it is far  from being completed and we all have our part to play in this, however small.</p>
<p>Designing a solar power heated home is a fine idea as it shows that you are preserving our natural resources for future generations.  It also means that regular increases in the cost of electricity and gas won&#8217;t affect you as much because you are taking advantage of a renewable energy source that won&#8217;t harm the environment.</p>
<p>Solar heating can be used to complement your existing hot water heating system or even to replace it completely if you so desire.<span id="more-112"></span></p>
<p>Once you choose to change your main power supply over to solar energy for hot water heating you will need to make some adjustments to the equipment that use the power source.  When you use solar power to heat up your water you could realize that you will have to get a solar powered water heater to be able to do that.</p>
<p>With a bit of luck, you may be able to save money by making adjustments to your current hot water heating system but no matter measures you decide on to turn it into solar power it will be worthwhile, financially and environmentally.</p>
<p>There are several different methods to heat your water by means of solar power. You can even make your own solar power source to do this. Heating water using solar power will occur before the water enters your home as it flows through the solar heating equipment . To be able to heat your water effectively you will need to have both a solar collector and a water storage tank of some kind.</p>
<p>A flat plate collector is the most conventional type of solar power collector. It&#8217;s designed as a slim, flat rectangular box that has a transparent cover and will carry the liquid to be heated.  This liquid might be the water or it may include a solution such as antifreeze that will inhibit the water from freezing. As the water moves through the tubes it goes to an absorber plate that&#8217;s painted black to absorb the heat from the sun.</p>
<p>As the sun&#8217;s rays heat up the collector this in turn will heat the fluid that passes through the tubes. Once the water passes through the tubes it then goes into the storage tank which will hold  the solar-heated water.  This storage tank will be well insulated so the water will retain the heat for a longer time.  The heated water held in this tank can be used by the home when needed.</p>
<p>Solar water heating systems are divided into two groups &#8211; active and passive.  When the heating systems are active, it means that they use  pumps or some other mechanical device to transfer the water between the flat plate collector and the storage tank.  Active water heating is the most common as it is quicker and more efficient.</p>
<p>The passive system relies on gravity to supply the water from the flat plate collector to the storage tank.  This can be slow at times and may not be enough enough to keep up with the demand.  Both ways work so it will be your own preference as to which one is more apt for your situation.  Another thing that you want to think about is that if your flat plate collector and your storage tank is not position correctly it might be hard for gravity to feed the liquid through.</p>
<p>When all&#8217;s said and done, heating your water via solar power collectors can be reasonably cost-effective and can be set up with a bit of effort.  Deciding to heat your water using solar power is a rational idea and a noble way to help care for our environment.

<p>Heating homes, schools or businesses with solar energy is not only easy but can be cost effective as well.  There are several ways that we can capture the sun&#8217;s heat even during a cold winter as long as the sun is shining.</p>
<p>It is a well known fact that the sun is the strongest from the south. So, if you are building a home to utilize solar power more effectively, it is best for the windows to face south.</p>
<p>In order to capture the sun&#8217;s heat you need something that will receive the sun rays and trap the heat from it when it enters.  A good example is a sun room or conservatory. These are attached to a home or a building and have a large area of glass panels to allow lots of sunlight in.</p>
<p>You may choose to add a sun room onto the side of the property which receives the morning sun allowing it to heat up naturally. With this in place you can then install ceiling fans that will circulate the warm air into other parts of the house.</p>
<p>When the sun shines into the room the glass allows the sun rays to heat the furniture and everything in the room. They are usually situated where they can take full advantage of the sun in order to get the full effect of the heat.</p>
<p>The objects and materials in the building will absorb and hold in the heat whilst the sun is shining and then disperse the heat when the sun goes down. The time lag property of thermal mass allows the use of fluctuating daytime solar energy as a more uniform night-time heat source. This way of trapping solar energy can be very efficient if it is constructed correctly, in fact it can sometimes be too efficient and shading may be required at times.</p>
<p>During the day this may well provide enough heat to maintain the warmth in your home. When modifying your home to make the most of solar power, it helps to install windows which are constructed from special materials which allow the heat from the sun to enter the house and prevent it from escaping.</p>
<p class="alert">A passive solar water system employs a solar collector that is joined into the home plumbing system. A solar collector can be a conventional water tank with a small number of modifications to attract more sunlight or it can be a flat plate collector that increases the efficiency in which heat can be transferred to water. A flat plate collector is basically a winding length of tube on a flat plate that is painted black. Water flows through the tube and the black-painted plate absorbs solar energy and transfers heats to the water as it passes through.</p>
<p>An example of capturing passive solar energy is the Trombe Wall. This is a natural solar heating and ventilation system that uses air channels to trap the heat between a glass object and a thermal mass that is facing the sun.</p>
<p>It is basically a massive wall separated from the outdoors by glazing and an air space, which absorbs solar energy and releases it selectively towards the interior at night. The sunlight gets trapped and stored inside this wall and is then circulated though vents and the top and the bottom of the wall.</p>
<p>Transpired air collectors are a low cost way to heat ambient air. They are generally wall mounted to capture the lower sun angles in the winter months, additional sun reflection off the snow and they also capture heat loss escaping from the building which is collected in the air cavity and drawn back into the ventilation system.</p>
<p>Solar Energy for Cooling</p>
<p>Solar energy can be used to reduce the temperature in a building and one way is with a solar chimney.</p>
<p>A Solar Chimney is a solar ventilation system made of a thermal mass that is hollow inside. Solar chimneys are painted black so that they absorb the sun&#8217;s heat more readily. When the air inside the chimney is heated by the sun, it causes the air inside the chimney to rise, creating an updraught which ventilates and cools the building.</p>
<p>A solar chimney may improve the natural ventilation and passive cooling of buildings on still hot days thus helping to reduce the use of air conditioning.</p>
<p>In cold weather we all need heat but to save money we also need to find out the best ways to save the heat from the day and use it to keep our house warm at night. As we have seen passive solar energy can be used not only for heating, but also for cooling and ventilation too.</p>
<p>Taking advantage of the sun&#8217;s energy to heat your home is a great way to save money on heating bills and also puts less strain on the environment.  You can still have a backup heating source in case the amount of sun you get can&#8217;t heat your home sufficiently during the day. No matter what you do you will still reduce the amount of electric or gas you normally use, which can&#8217;t be a bad thing now, can it?

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>There are two different types of wind turbine; Vertical and Horizontal.  Each one works their in their own particular way and they each have their advantages and disadvantages. One thing they have in common and that is that they both produce energy from the wind &#8211; they just do it in a different way.<span id="more-80"></span></p>
<p>Vertical axis turbines have the main rotor shaft running vertically instead of horizontally which has advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage is the gearbox can be located in the bottom of the turbine, unlike the horizontal turbines.  This means that all the weight is not at the top of the tower.</p>
<p>It also does not need to be pointed in the direction of the wind. The disadvantages of vertical axis wind turbines is that pulsating torques can occur during each turn when the turbine is running in the same direction as the wind. They also produce a smaller amount of energy from the wind.</p>
<p><strong>Different Types of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines</strong></p>
<p>This type of turbine is the newest out there as it looks like sails on a ship once it is up and running.  The sails can expand or contract to the changing winds. There are three sails on it and the speed is managed through a magnetic counter that expands or contracts these vertical sails.  It has a control unit that can control the sails so the damage will be reduced in bad weather. The sails might tear but the frame is durable and will withstand stormy weather.</p>
<p>An aerodynamic turbine is made up of an airfoil base that is designed to capture the kinetic energy flowing from an artificial current to the center.  It can utilize most of the air mass that passes through by redirecting it over the upper turbines.  It can respond to wind and also rivers, creeks, oceans or other free flowing water systems.</p>
<p><strong>Darrieus Wind Turbines</strong> are efficient but because of their size and shape they can produce cyclic stress on the tower which can wear it out much more quickly. It features three blades that work well in higher winds. They are held up by external structures that are connected from the ground up.</p>
<p>A <strong>Giromill i</strong>s a type of turbine that has three vertical blades and is self starting so the maintenance is low. These types of mills have a low blade speed but they can produce high performance and are successful in channeling the energy with every turn of the blade.</p>
<p><strong>Savonius Wind Turbine</strong> mills have two scoops that are used for wind conversion. Some do come in three scoops that make it self starting.  They look like long helicopter blades that are bent in a particular direction and can provide adequate energy.</p>
<p><strong>Windstar Turbines</strong> has straight aluminum blades that are attached on each end of the rotating shaft.  This windmill features more than one rotor and they each have their own dual braking system that has pneumatic disc brakes.  They are designed for strong powerful winds.</p>
<p>The advantages in running a vertical axis wind turbine is that they are easier to maintain, can withstand almost most wind conditions, low and high, and are smaller and easier to transport.  The disadvantages are they take twice as much time to produce efficient energy from winds, need to be installed on flat land, have low starting torque, and some use guyed wires which can add stress to the bottom.</p>

<p>If the wind that they harness is in great enough amounts it can be converted into useful electrical energy.   <span id="more-76"></span></p>
<p>There is also the traditional windmill that has been used for centuries to crush grain for flour making. When the wind was blowing the windmill blades would turn, and they would turn a mechanism inside which was attached to large stones that would grind the grain into flour. In general, wind turbines are a environmentally-friendly alternative to using fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources to produce our power or do useful work.</p>
<p><strong>Noise From Wind Turbines</strong></p>
<p>The one main complaint with people and turbines is the noise they make, which can be constant and annoying to some but not everyone notices it.  The other complaint is that they are unsightly to look at, but compared to the hideous electricity pylons striding across the countryside they are quite elegant. In fact some people find them quite attractive, believe it or not.</p>
<p><strong>Offshore Wind Farms</strong></p>
<p>There are many offshore wind farm locations around and there&#8217;s no doubt many more will be built in the future. There are many different locations that are suitable for wind power generation but situating them off the coast, although more difficult, is advantageous for many reasons, not least of all the reduced visual impact.</p>
<p>Offshore wind turbines are located in the sea to produce energy from the generally higher wind speeds that can be found there. Because seaside locations are generally very windy due to the tides coming in and the wind on the water, it can be a good location for a turbine. The average wind speed is usually higher on the water because the water has less surface roughness and can utilize more energy from the wind.</p>
<p>When the wind turbines are set in the seabed they are not placed in straight rows but in a kind of fan shape so that the turbulence created from the blades on each turbine does not affect the other wind turbines. This makes them more efficient.</p>
<p>However, there are issues and concerns with how wildlife is affected by these towers in their nesting and habitats but it does not seem to have as great an impact as feared.</p>
<p>There is another concern that the shoreline wind farms are not seen as attractive to many people who visit our coastline. Everyone has their opinion but it has to be said that some people like to see these modern-day wind mills and find them attractive. The size of the towers can be reduced to reduce their visual impact but in general the shorter the tower the less amount of energy will be generated. Luckily, they don&#8217;t spoil the view as much when they are out on the water with the added benefit that the noise they make cannot be heard on land. Even close to shore turbines can be seen but not heard.</p>
<p>Overall, off shore wind turbines are here to stay and there are advantages and disadvantages to them.  For instance, when they are built offshore it may cost more money in the long run due to higher maintenance costs.</p>
<p>The problem with offshore wind farms is that the salt in the water and air is very corrosive to steel and will reduce the expected lifetime of these turbines which means they will need replacing sooner. We have to weigh the pros and cons of offshore wind turbines carefully to see whether or not they are financially viable in the long term.

<p>This has caused many people to seriously consider wind power as an alternative energy source &#8211; and why not because the wind is free and in plentiful supply.<span id="more-71"></span></p>
<p><strong>Why Choose Wind Power? </strong></p>
<p>Electric bills are steadily increasing but the cost of wind turbine energy, apart from installion and maintenance costs, is zero. Startup costs may be considerable but the good news is that the cost of installing and hooking up a turbine is steadily falling as demand rises and companies are having more commercial success producing the turbines and making them more efficient.</p>
<p>However, the reasons why people are moving away from the traditional energy sources are varied and not always financial.</p>
<p>Many people turn to alternative energy solutions not to save money but because of political concerns and the possibility of terrorist strikes on power supplies which would leave them without any electricity for the many modern appliances they have come to rely on. Many choose to do it simply because they are concerned about their own impact on the environment. Whatever their reasons for choosing wind power they then have to think about how to implement a wind power system.</p>

<p><strong>Are You In or Out?</strong></p>
<p>Make up your mind to go into the house or out of the house.  By opening the door and running into the house as well as out of the house all of the time, you are wasting energy.</p>
<p>Do you remember when your mother used to go mad at you when you did this?  Not only was it annoying, but it also wasted a lot of energy.  It let the cool air out in the summer and the warm air out in the winter.  So make up your mind about whether you are going in or out.</p>
<p><strong>Take a Quick Shower</strong></p>
<p>A quick shower is all you need to get clean!  You do not have to be in the shower for 30 minutes with the water running, like some members of my family, to get clean.  Once you have soaped yourself and rinsed, you cannot get any cleaner.  Unless you happen to work in a real dirty job, you do not need to spend ages in the shower.  Take a quick shower then get out and save on your energy bill.</p>
<p><strong>Turn off the TV when not in use</strong></p>
<p>There is no point in having the TV on in the room when no one is watching.  The televisions of today are not like those in the old days that took a while to warm up.   Within a minute of switching them on, you can start watching them!  And why do you have them on in a room when you are on the phone in another room?  Turn the TV off when you are not watching it and save electricity.</p>
<p>If you have a problem getting to sleep without the TV on, as some people do, you can set a timer on the TV that will switch it off when you fall asleep.  This way, your TV is not running all night and burning electricity &#8211; and a hole in your pocket.<br />

Turn off lights when you are not in the room</strong></p>
<p>The instant you switch on a light, it lights up the room.  Therefore, there is no reason why you need to have lights burning in the room when no one is in there.  If you need a light to get to the bathroom during the night, you should use a night light that uses less energy. Using energy saving bulbs is another good way to use less electricity.</p>
<p><strong>Cooking On Gas</strong></p>
<p>Do you cook with the gas ring on full even when boiling an egg? I can tell you now that having the water boiling furiously will not make it any hotter and the eggs will take just as long to boil. Water boils at only one temperature at sea level. All you are doing is wasting gas, creating condensation, and wasting money.</p>
<p>Once the water starts boiling, all you have to do is turn the gas flame down so that it is just bubbling gently. It will also help to avoid condensation caused by the steam from the pan. Keeping a lid on pans will also help to lower the gas, retain heat and prevent condensation.</p>
<p>All these energy saving tips are easy to do but can save money on your energy bills.</p>
